Working in a paper mill was the one area of my life where dreaming felt impossible. As my career in paper manufacturing progressed, the Golden Handcuffs slowly tightened. The money was good. Good enough that leaving got harder every year I stayed. Success wasn't unlocking my dreams; it was shrinking them. I struggled to see past tomorrow's shift, whether I'd get called in that night, and what that meant for any kind of life I tried to plan outside those walls. I couldn't imagine a future without the mill because the mill never let me look that far ahead.
Construction professionals know a version of this too. Different shift, different tools, same trade off: the schedule owns you, the physical toll adds up, and "someday" keeps getting pushed to next year.
I knew I couldn't be the only one feeling this way, but I also knew few people outside it could truly understand what that weight feels like day after day, month after month, year after year.
Here's what I learned: while money is what tightens the Golden Handcuffs, it's also the only thing that can break them. Once I figured out how to make my money work as hard as I did, the mill stopped being a life sentence and started being a launchpad. That discovery became Flying V Financial.
Now that's where my passion lives: taking that tightness and turning it into freedom. Not someday freedom. The kind where you can turn down the overtime, watch your kid's game, or walk away from the shift entirely, on your terms and your timeline.
